Primary Foreign Languages: French

Practical Workshop: Basic Language Skills Confidence Booster French

Lack of teacher skills and confidence is cited as a key barrier to the effective teaching of MFL in primary schools. This workshop is aimed at non-specialist teachers and teaching assistants who lack confidence in their own skills and subject knowledge in French.   This workshop will explain some key concepts and equip participants with a small toolkit of fun games, songs and activities that will help develop the confidence needed to teach French in the primary classroom.   During the workshop, we will model the methodology that we advocate using with children, enabling participants to experience first-hand how effective these strategies are in supporting participation, building confidence and ensuring that knowledge sticks.   Participants will leave this workshop feeling enthused and significantly more confident in their own abilities to teach primary MFL.

Content:

  • discussion of the many benefits of class-teachers being the person who delivers MFL teaching in the primary classroom
  • discovery and explanation of basic pronunciation rules, key phonic patterns and spelling rules
  • discovery and explanation of key grammar concepts including adjectival position and adjectival agreement
  • modelling of how to teach a simple finger rhyme
  • introduction to a small selection of simple but highly effective games that can be used to introduce new language and revisit high frequency language

Target Audience:

This workshop is ideal for anyone involved in teaching foreign languages, including class teachers, teaching assistants and new subject leaders. Delegates will be fully supported with opportunities to practice the language and try out a range of activities using carefully selected activities.

Trainers:

Dawn will be working alongside Odette Hunt to deliver this course.
